An overview of press freedom in Europe, with a closer look at how individual countries changed over time.

The project

Created for ERSTE Foundation, this dashboard pairs a European overview with country-level histories using Reporters Without Borders data. It was designed to let readers move between the regional pattern and individual national trajectories. The images document the original project rather than a live view of current rankings.

Original project notes

As a journalist, this is one’s personal. Unfortunately, in many countries journalists are not able to publish or speak about issues as freely as I have the privilege to. The development of the Freedom of Press, as observed by Reporters without Borders has shown dramatic worsening over the past two decades in Europe.
