An interactive exploration of textual variation in the Gospel of John, connecting a chapter-wide overview with individual verses and manuscript evidence.
Making textual variation visible
I built Unstable John to explore where surviving manuscripts agree and where their wording differs. The interface brings an overview, verse-level navigation, manuscript families and an explanation of the method into one place.
A map of the whole text
The stability heatmap arranges chapters and verses in a compact grid. Colour makes patterns of agreement and variation visible, while each cell links to its verse. Readers can switch between family-vote and raw-count metrics, change the orientation, or use the verse search to jump directly to a passage.
Keeping uncertainty in view
Hatching flags verses with limited supporting evidence, keeping confidence distinct from the stability score. Ranked verses and chapter summaries offer other entry points into the material; the method page explains how to interpret the measures.
Stability here is a measure of agreement within the represented manuscript evidence, not a claim that a particular reading is historically correct.
