Each circle represents a planet. Its position relates the mass of its host star to its orbital distance; familiar planets in our Solar System provide reference points. Two green bands mark different estimates of the habitable zone.
The spread also shows how discoveries accumulated across detection methods through 2018. The habitable-zone graphic describes possible conditions for liquid water, not evidence that life has been found.
