Public data needs a public language

Climate and ecological data belong in the public conversation. In the 21st century, decisions about energy, water, land use and resources call for an understanding of systems that extend beyond everyday experience. Clear visual communication gives people a way into that complexity: a place to compare, ask questions and understand what a change could mean for their region.

For me, the task is to make the evidence approachable without making it seem simpler or more certain than it is. A projection should read as a projection; a long-term trend needs its timescale; a regional comparison needs context. Good data graphics can help people participate in the discussion and assess the choices being made in their name.

The same subjects, a wider readership

I create data visualisations for blicke, Land Niederösterreich’s consumer-oriented magazine. It connects with the annual climate and energy reports, translating related topics into visual stories for a general audience. These selected spreads bring charts and explanatory diagrams into the magazine’s editorial storytelling.

Making ecological relationships visible

The soil spread connects composition and biodiversity, giving readers a visual entry point into what lies beneath the surface.

Energy in everyday life

The energy spread places data alongside the experience of a local energy initiative, connecting the wider transition with the places where it happens.

People are part of the picture

Environmental reporting also needs a social perspective. Comparisons of women’s representation in local government and access to childcare make the social dimensions of life in the region visible.

Resources, waste and the bigger picture

A stacked history shows how waste volumes and their composition have changed. The accompanying indicator summary places waste and the circular economy in a broader context of conditions, action and outcomes.
